“We develop good habits and grow confidence in their belief that they can reach their goals. Train to be the best with the best.

The Youth Strength Academy

All Core Gym Performance is proud to introduce our exclusive student focused Strength Academy program. “Children are children” and “The Adult within” programs were developed and formed in 2007 in Galway’s first private Strength and Conditioning training facility.

We are now locating to Galway City, where we have supervised many amateur teams across various sports (u16-Adult) and have had the opportunity of working with Connacht rugby age grade development squads and continue to do so in a voluntary capacity. We have been involved with 100s of some excellent young and future county, provincial and national athletes across Ireland, representing rugby, soccer, GAA, swimming, triathlon and other sports.

Who is it for?

Connacht youths Strength Academy is designed specifically for young clients 1st through 6th year grades (13-18 year olds). The goal of resistance training for youth players is to help enhance physical fitness and improve sport performance and to reduce the probability of injury during sport and recreational activities. The major benefits include:

  • Increased muscular strength and local muscular endurance (i.e., the ability of a muscle or muscles to perform multiple repetitions against a given resistance)
  • Decreased injuries in sports and recreational activities
  • Improved performance capacity in sports and recreational activities

Supervised Gym

Connacht Strength Academy student athletes are never placed in an adult group setting or left unsupervised. All workouts are conducted in small groups not exceeding 16 in a supervised gym setting, with two appropriately qualified youth strength and conditioning coaches.

All Core Gym Performance offers fitness testing assessments to all teams in all sports. Coaches will receive a comprehensive report detailing their players individual scores in relation to the whole team. Below is an outline of the tests, although these can be amended to suit the sport:

  • Body Composition – body weight, height and % body fat, Cardio Scan*
  • Speed tests – 20 metre speed test with times taken at the 5, 10 ,15 and 20 metres
  • Strength Tests – OBW, UB, LB
  • Endurance tests – e.g. Yoyo intermittent recovery test level 2, 150M Shuttles, 3K etc.
  • Counter Movement Jump (CMJ)
  • FMS

It is important to understand why we measure and monitor progress. If the athlete improves then the program works, if he doesn’t, then the reason needs to be identified. Without measuring we cannot progress forward efficiently and effectively.

Strength Training for 13 to 18 Year Olds

Connacht Strength Academy utilizes own body weight exercise programs and also introduces suitable gym equipment that allows the student the opportunity to train in a progressive and challenging way.

All Core Gym in association with our Performance Gym run specific strength and conditioning classes for teenagers at certain times throughout the year. These classes run predominantly during the Summer and at Easter and at weekends during the year subject to numbers.

The Summer classes are run over a four-week block with three classes per week. These classes will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 3pm and cost €70 for members and €100 for non-members.  The emphasis during these classes will be on learning the correct technique in each exercise.

We place a lot of emphasis on learning the correct technique of each exercise and its combinations that once this has been established appropriate strength building can commence.

We will begin by:

•  Assessing, discussing and programming correctives

•  Building foundation strength

•  Developing the correct technique

•  Improving range of motion

•  Improving flexibility

•  Improving sports performance and reducing injury risk

Sports Coaching

If your child shows an interest in a sport, you may consider hiring a sports coach to help him or her progress to a higher level. Here is all the information you’ll need to know about sports coaching for children:

Safeguarding Children

All sports coaches working with children should meet certain standards proving they are safe, trustworthy and competent. When choosing a sports coach, make sure they have been Garda Vetted and checked recently.

Understanding Development Stages

Children are always growing. As they get older, their bodies undergo fundamental biochemical changes that will inevitably effect their sporting performances. Coaches need to be aware of child development stages so they can adapt training programmes over time to match the changing bodies and minds of the children they coach.

Inspiring Positive Development

Sports coaching usually takes a holistic approach to performance. Children benefit from sports coaching because it teaches them skills they can apply to everyday life, including:

  • good work ethic
  • confidence
  • sportsmanship
  • discipline and focus
  • communication skills
  • leadership and team playing.

Connacht Strength Academy is constantly benchmarking and tracking individual progress for continual player development. If we don’t measure and discuss individual progress, then we can never understand if a program is working or not.

Connacht Strength Academy utilises a measuring system (MTP program) consisting of an FMS test, Smart Jump and Smart Speed data collection, with a comprehensive Dartfish video analysis system. Strength Academy students achieve specific benchmarks and can only move forward when ready to do so. Correct Movement allows the individual to progress to the next level in four different, important areas: Upper Body, Lower Body, Core/Trunk, Flexibility/Balance. We care about the individual’s progress and all coaches fully understand the LTPD Pathways for the development of a young 3-dimensional athlete that can Move well, Train well and Play well.
